Matt Reeves & Terence Winter Making HBO Max Gotham City Police Series

Fans may still have over a year to wait until he delivers his highly-anticipated Robert Pattinson-starring reboot, Matt Reeves is already planning to expand his world of The Batman with a series focused on the Gotham City Police Department at HBO Max in association with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter!

The new series, being penned by Winter, will be set in the world Reeves is currently creating for the 2021 DC Extended Universe installment and will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Dark Knight universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” Reeves said in a statement.

The project comes on the heels of Reeves’ overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group, under which he will help develop and produce various series across WarnerMedia’s multiple platforms including fresh streaming service HBO Max.

“We are so fortunate to have such great partners in Matt, Dylan, and Terry and unprecedented access to a wealth of IP from our partners at Warner Bros. and DC,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said in a statement.

Reeves’ 6th & Idaho production company will produce the series in association with Warner Bros. Television. Reeves and Emmy winner/Oscar nominee Winter ( The Sopranos, The Wolf of Wall Street ) will executive produce with Dylan Clark ( Bird Box, Rise, Dawn, and War for Planet of the Apes ). The drama, which is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, will also be executive produced by 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski ( From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series ) and Adam Kassan ( Tales from the Loop ) while Rafi Crohn ( Tales from the Loop ) will co-executive produce. Warner Bros. International Television Distribution will distribute the series globally.

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows us to elaborate and grow fan connections across these powerful brands for years to come,” Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max and President of TNT, TBS and TruTV, said in a statement. “This is Batman as most audiences have never seen before and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film.”

Written and directed by Natalie Erika James in her feature debut, the film focused on elderly mother Edna as she inexplicably vanishes and sees her daughter Kay (Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she’s been clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back.

As Edna’s behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her. All three generations of women are brought together through trauma and a powerful sense of strength and loyalty to face the ultimate fear together.

Alongside Mortimer, the film’s cast includes Robyn Nevin ( Top of the Lake , The Eye of the Storm ), Bella Heathcoate ( Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, Pieces of Her ) and Jeremy Sanford ( Satisfaction , Worst Year of My Life ).

Relic is produced by Anna McLeish, Sarah Shaw, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riva Marker, with the Russo Brothers, Mike Larocca, Todd Makurath, Wang Zhonqiun, Wang Zhonglei, and Hu Junyi all attached as executive producers. Neil Gaiman Teases Changes for Netflix’s Sandman Series

After decades of failed attempts to bring the Sandman saga to the big or small screen, Neil Gaiman sounds confident that the series will finally come to life on Netflix in the near future. But when the show finally premieres, fans might notice a few key differences. While speaking with, Gaiman described how he and the series’ producers are approaching the story. Among other details, they’re rethinking how to portray certain characters (via SuperHeroHype).

During the interview, Gaiman discussed both the upcoming Netflix series as well as the Sandman audiobook drama debuting next Wednesday. He explained that turning the story into an audiobook is easier, since it only requires actors to give a dramatic reading of the original comics. However, adapting the series for live-action presents its own set of challenges.

“But the idea is that we tell the whole thing,” said Gaiman. “We also get to do something that I think is kind of special, which is treat it as an audiobook, because doing the Netflix TV series, we’re very much looking at that as going, ‘Okay, it is 2020, let’s say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?’”

Honestly, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Gender-swapping has become something of a norm in the realm of comic adaptations, especially those that make it to TV. We’ve seen it happen everywhere from The Walking Dead to The Boys and beyond. Not only does this make the show more inclusive, but it also subverts audience expectations and makes the story more exciting.

The Sandman audiobook hits digital platforms on July 15. The Netflix series is still without a release date.

Luke Evans Gives Update on Beauty and the Beast Prequel Series

Last March, it was announced that Disney+ was developing an untitled Beauty and the Beast prequel series which will center around Gaston and LeFou with Luke Evans ( The Hobbit trilogy ) and Josh Gad ( Frozen ) attached to reprise their villain roles from the 2017 live-action film. In a recent interview with Collider, Evans has finally opened up about the project by revealing the status of the series’ current development, while also confirming that scripts for some episodes have already been completed as well as some new music from award-winning composer Alan Menken.

“Now, we’re in fully fledged development. The second and third episodes have been written and we’ve heard some of the music by Alan Menken,” Evans said. “We’re just so honored to have him on board, writing the music, which is extraordinary, in itself. We feel so lucky to have this talented group of people creating a story about two much loved and much hated characters, but that’s the excitement. There are a lot of questions about, where we will start? What we will tell? Who are these people? When you visit them, where will they be? So, it’s going to be a really fun experience. Me and Josh are literally vibrating with excitement to shoot it.”

In addition, he also shared that the idea for a Gaston and Lefou series came from his and Gad’s desire to be able to work together again. Following their stint on Beauty and the Beast , the duo tried for a long time to search for other projects they could work on. “In the back of our minds, we definitely had thoughts about revisiting Gaston and LeFou in a different story, obviously. So, when the idea really came to fruition and we got on board some incredible writers, and Josh, especially, had an incredible idea that, once it was born, it just flew itself. And when we pitched the idea to Disney+, they were very excited about it.”

The series, which is being penned by Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, will be a six-episode limited series musical event with composer Alan Menken also in talks to return to craft music for the series. The project is currently in early development, with no other stars currently attached, but sources are reporting that there is a possibility they could appear in guest spots.

Horowitz and Kitsis are going to partner with Gad to serve as showrunners on the series, with the trio writing all six scripts and executive producing alongside Evans, while ABC Signature Studios is funding the project.

This prequel series will mark the second extension from a live-action Disney remake for the streaming service as a spin-off film focusing on Billy Magnussen’s Prince Anders from last year’s Aladdin is currently in development, while reboots of The Mighty Ducks and Tucker and Hooch are also in development.

Beauty and the Beast starred Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; and Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp. The film also featured Ewan McGregor as Lumière, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, Audra McDonald as Garderobe and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts.

Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast hit theaters in March 2017 to generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the visual effects and faithfulness to the original while also receiving some criticisms for its lack of doing anything new with the material. It went on to be a major box office success, grossing over $1.25 billion worldwide on a production budget estimated between $160-255 million.

CS Interview: Nicco Annan on Empowering & Challenging Role in P-Valley

Ahead of the fantastic series’ debut on Starz, got the opportunity to chat with star Nicco Annan ( Claws ) to discuss his work in the upcoming drama P-Valley and the empowering and challenging nature of portraying the radiant Uncle Clifford, owner of the series’ central strip club.

Alongside some minor roles in various series over the years, Annan has been a part of P-Valley going all the way back to its inception, receiving even the shortest of drafts for the theater productions from creator Katori Hall before playing Uncle Clifford on stage. In looking at why he chose to stick with the part all this time and in its jump to television, he looks back at his first time reading the scripts and finding “it leapt off the page to me” and that it was “fresh, it felt bold and it felt like something that I had never seen in the artistic space.”

“I’ve seen people like Uncle Clifford, I’ve seen non-binary people in my life, I have associates and people within my circle that are genderfluid, but I had never seen it in cinema this way, in a way that wasn’t rooted from that magical negro,” Annan explained. “It was a character that had heart and the humanity of it I felt really came across in Katori’s writing and it felt like this is a chance of a lifetime to be a part of something that can expand the lexicon of characters that represent my community and I just wanted to be able to bring that humanity to it. That was just for doing the role period, but when it was coming to the screen, it felt like an even more intimate experience than the stage production and working on it in the theater.”

Going from the stage to an eight-episode series “felt like a rollercoaster” for Annan, where he began to learn new things and found he chose to really focus “on getting it true, not getting it right” and wanting to be “really truthful” to the character of Uncle Clifford and the world she lives in.

“I look at P-Valley as like a world of people that I call ruby people because they’re jewels and there was a conversation that Nikki Giovanni had once with James Baldwin back in the ‘70s and that always stuck out to me and she said, ‘Would you dare to write a world of just ruby black people?’” Annan expressed. “I feel like Katori has done that, so I feel like this is a world of ruby people climbing up the pole to get out of the bottom and it just felt so empowering to see all of these people and to be able to go home with them. To see them outside of the club, to see them in their homes, to see them at the grocery store, to see them at the barbershops and nail salons and wig shops, it just felt like, ‘Oh, we get the full human experience,’ and that process was all a part of the rollercoaster ride.”

In crafting the character of Uncle Clifford, Hall looked at three of her family members as major influences for parts of her personality, but Annan didn’t quite have the same path, rather choosing to “observe society” as inspiration for tapping into Clifford while noting one of his own family members he kept in his mind.

“I have met members of her family and I have met the Clifford in her family, I have an Uncle Bill that is deceased that there are parts of him that I put into Uncle Clifford to pay homage to,” Annan described. “But what I really wanted to do was I looked at humanity and I was on social media a lot and I looked at people that were in the non-binary space and I just looked at their feeds and wondered what life would be like for them at home, I just tried to infer really kind of put myself in their positions. I am a gay man, proudly so, so I felt compelled even more so to be that honest and that truthful with the storytelling, so I really wanted it to hit home and be like a torch for my community.”

As he jokes that one of his biggest creative challenges for portraying Clifford was being “in heels on the concrete floor of the club all night long,” Annan reveals his true challenge would be learning to “leave yourself alone” in regards to his performance and depiction of his character.

“Leaving myself alone and not having to justify something being feminine or justify something being masculine, but just resting in my own spirit of Clifford that this is who she is, she can be all things, she can access her masculinity and her male privilege just as she can access her femininity and what some may see as softness or submission, but it really is all means to get out of that bottom, climb that pole, get what you need to get,” Annan explained.

One of the biggest things the star found major enjoyment with was getting to dive into the wardrobe department for the series and Uncle Clifford, calling the work from costume designer Rita McGhee and assistant costume designer Alita McGhee Bailey as “absolutely amazing.”

“The looks for Uncle Clifford were so specific, not only from Katori’s mind, because the show is truly one that can be picked apart for its cinematic references and the design of it, it is built to be more than just, ‘Oh, they’re in the club,’” Annan noted. “But when you look at the color schemes and things of that nature, it was really fun it was welcoming, it was an adventure, it was also organic. A part of my creating Uncle Clifford and bringing her to life, I would go shopping at Marshall’s, at TJ Maxx, at Ross, at different department stores. Not the high high-end, I wanted to go to places that people in the south would have access to in a place like Chucalissa and I just wanted to feel what it would be like to shop as Uncle Clifford. The frustration of, ‘Oh I can’t find this in my size’ or the stares that people may give you for looking at clothing and putting it up to your body to see if it’s too long, too short, fits or what have you, those glancing eyes, and also the nods of approval when I would try different shoes and heels on in the store to see if they fit.

For my audition, for my screen test and things like that, it was great to be in the costume, the costumes was a world that we were well-versed in and we tried everything and we really wanted to be expressive of mood moreso than just labels. There were things that come into the play with just the very first look that you see Uncle Clifford in. I know I wanted people to get accustomed to seeing Uncle Clifford, because I know a lot of people may not have a non-binary person in their life, so I thought about that people used to call them pansies or pansy men back in the ‘70s, I thought about Sylvester, Rick James, Parliament, Prince, those kinds of influences were a part of our design and initial looks for Uncle Clifford. It was literally like a funhouse to be able to play with Rita and Alita, looking at, ‘How does Uncle Clifford feel today, where is she going, is it a club night or is this about the day? Are we in club mode,’ because in club mode there’s always specific types of thing, because it’s a strip club, but it’s a place where everyone can be free to whoever they are and get all of their desires met. Unc has to be dressed in her floss too, gotta show a little skin [laughs].”

Though keeping tight-lipped about some of the specifics of what audiences can expect to see from their new favorite TV uncle and strip club owner, Annan did reveal that viewers are “definitely going to get to know who she is” and hopefully will “want to be her friend, even if you don’t want to in the beginning.”

“Things get hot up in the pink on a lot of levels whether that’s a physical level, a heated emotional level and a heated romantic level, but I think overall you can expect for Uncle Clifford to see the legacy that she comes from,” Annan unveiled. “You will be able to see the legacy that she’s coming from and is trying to leave behind.”

Annan and his co-stars all found each other on social media prior to filming and built up a strong rapport amongst one another that when it came time to shoot the pilot for Starz, he recalls they all came to terms and a certain agreement for production and believing it to be his fondest memory from the set.

“We had come to an agreement and an understanding that doing this project, it required such a high level of vulnerability from us physically to just be exposed in front of patrons of the club and that nature that we felt that we all had to be so honest with one another from the gate so that the rapport was manifest in our emotional nakedness,” Annan reflected. “We were exposed physically but we were also exposed emotionally and we took care of that space, we really honored one another and that spilled over from the cast to the crew to the production. It all started from the head with Katori in that she was specific that nothing would be gratuitous. My fondest memory would be when we made that pact in the club, it was after a take, we said, ’Y’all, this is some stuff, we’re really doing this, y’all ready? Let’s go, this is what it has to be.’”

Created by Katori Hall, the series is set down deep in the Mississippi Delta, where lies an oasis of grit and glitter in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find. This Southern-fried, hour-long drama tells the kaleidoscopic story of a “little strip club that could” and the big characters who come through its doors — the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful and the damned. Trap music meets film noir in this lyrical and atmospheric series that dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of the Piggly Wiggly and the pawnshop.

Alongside Evans, the cast for the series includes Nicco Annan ( Claws ), Shannon Thornton ( Power ), Elarica Johnson ( A Discovery of Witches ), J. Alphonse Nicholson ( Just Mercy ), Parker Sawyers ( Southside with You ), Brandon Gilpin ( High Maintenance ) and Morocco Omari ( 21 Bridges ).
